This stage happens before they change into adults. This change is called metamorphosis.

Larvae often look very different from their parents. They may have different body parts or organs. Their diet can be very different, too.

Some larvae live in water. A tadpole is a larva that lives in water. Later, it becomes a frog on land. Living in a new place can help them. It can keep them safe from predators. It also helps them find food without fighting adults. Larvae must eat a lot of food. This food gives them the power to change. Some larvae move around to find new homes. This helps them spread out to new places. In some groups, like paper wasps, adults feed the larvae. In these groups, female workers do the feeding. Some male wasps can help too. However, they are not as good at it. They spend more time to get less food. This helps the young grow strong.
