Pupa

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Some insects go through a big change. This is called metamorphosis. They start as eggs. Then they grow into larvae. Next, they become a pupa.

Finally, they grow into adults.

A pupa is a stage for building. Inside, the insect makes adult parts. It breaks down its old larval parts. Most pupae do not eat. They also stay in one place.

To stay safe, pupae hide. Many moths spin a silk case. We call this a cocoon.

Some pupae stay underground. Others live in nests. Some even use chemicals to stay safe.

When it is time, the adult must leave. This is called eclosion. The insect splits its pupal case. Butterflies often come out in the morning. Mosquitoes come out at night. After they come out, the old shell is left behind. We call this empty shell an exuvia.
