About 400 million years ago, a big change began.

This happened during the Devonian Period. It is often called the "Age of Fish." During this time, lobe-finned fish began to change. These fish had fins with strong bones inside.

These bones were like our own arm and leg bones.

Some fish lived in shallow, muddy water. They needed new ways to live. They grew lungs to breathe air. Lungs are gas-filled bags that help an animal get oxygen.

This helped them when there was not much air in the water. They also grew internal nares. These are holes inside the mouth that let them breathe through their noses.

Over time, these fish became tetrapods. Tetrapods are animals with four limbs. This group includes all birds, reptiles, and mammals.

Early tetrapods like Acanthostega had feet with eight digits. Some lived in swamps. Even though they had limbs, they likely stayed in shallow water. They did not walk on dry land like we do today.
