The coelacanth is a very old fish.

Scientists thought they were gone forever. They believed these fish died out long ago. But a woman named Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer found one in 1938!

This was a big surprise. It showed the fish was still alive.

Today, there are two kinds of living coelacanths. One kind lives in the Indian Ocean near Africa.

The other kind lives near Indonesia. These fish are called lobe-finned fish. This means they have thick fins with strong parts inside. They are close relatives to land animals like birds and mammals.

Coelacanths have many special parts. They have eight fins in total. Their body is covered in thick scales. These scales act like armor to protect them. They also have a special joint in their skull. This joint is called an intracranial joint. It helps them open their mouths very wide. Some old coelacanths were even bigger than humans!
