This is the very last stage of metamorphosis. Metamorphosis is the way an insect grows and changes. Scientists call this the imaginal stage. It is when the insect finally reaches maturity. This stage is important for the life of the insect.

How does an insect become an imago? It happens through a thing called ecdysis. Ecdysis is when an insect sheds its old skin. This follows the last immature stage. Some insects are called Hemimetabola. They have incomplete metamorphosis. For them, the final skin shed follows the nymph stage. Other insects are called Holometabola. They have a pupa stage. For them, the imago comes after the pupa stage.

Insects have different ways of reaching this final form. Some species have a long time to mature. The imago is the only stage that is sexually mature. This means the insect can now have babies. If the insect has wings, it can use them. The imago is the only stage with wings that work.

Some insects have a strange step in their growth. Mayflies belong to a group called Ephemeroptera. They do not have a pupa stage. Instead, they have a stage called a subimago. This is an intermediate winged stage. A subimago has wings that work well. However, it is not yet sexually mature. It must become an imago to finish its growth.

People who study insects are called entomologists. They use special words for many insects. The Latin plural for imago is imagines. You can also say imagoes. Both of these words are correct.
