It sits in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and is the capital of the Vienne department. The city is located on a high piece of land called a promontory. This land sits between the valleys of the Boivre and Clain rivers. Geographically, it sits on a gap called the Seuil du Poitou. This gap connects the Paris Basin in the north to the Aquitaine Basin in the south. Because of this, the area is an important crossroads in Western Europe.

Poitiers has a very long and busy history. It was first founded by a Celtic tribe called the Pictones. They called the place Oppidum Lemonum before the Romans arrived. Later, the Romans called the town Pictavium. The Romans built huge things like an amphitheater and three aqueducts.

The second was the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. This happened during the Hundred Years' War. In this battle, the English defeated a larger French army. They even captured King John II of France. These events changed the history of the whole region.
