The Battle of Tours was a very important event in history. It took place in the early 700s during a time of big changes. This battle was part of the Umayyad invasion of Gaul. Gaul was a large area that is now part of western Europe. Many people believe this fight helped decide the future of the continent. It changed how different groups of people lived and ruled.

The battle happened between two very different armies. One group was the Umayyad forces coming from the south. They were led by a governor named Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi. The other group was made of Frankish and Aquitanian soldiers. These soldiers were led by a man named Charles Martel. They met in a place between the cities of Tours and Poitiers. Most people think they met where the Clain and Vienne rivers join.

Historians have studied many old books to learn about this day. Some sources say the battle happened on October 10, 732. Other sources suggest a date in late 733. It is hard to know the exact number of soldiers. Some writers say the Umayyad army had 80,000 men. Other experts think the Frankish army had about 30,000 soldiers. Some believe the two armies were actually about the same size.

The battle helped him become much stronger as a leader. It also helped start the Carolingian Empire. This empire would rule much of western Europe for a long time. The victory helped keep Frankish power in the region.
