Two major battles took place near this area. The first was the Battle of Tours in the year 732. In this fight, Charles Martel defeated an army from the Umayyad Caliphate. The second was the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. This happened during the Hundred Years' War. In this battle, the English defeated a larger French army. They even captured King John II of France. These events changed the history of the whole region.

The city is often called the "Ville aux cent clochers," or the "City of a hundred bell towers." This nickname reflects its many religious edifices and historic architecture. Visitors can find many preserved half-timbered houses and Romanesque buildings.
The history of Poitiers began with the Celtic tribe known as the Pictones. They originally called the settlement Oppidum Lemonum, which likely came from the Celtic word for elm, "Lemo." Following the Roman conquest, the town became known as Pictavium. The Romans built an extensive ensemble of structures here. This included at least three aqueducts and a massive amphitheater. This amphitheater was even larger than the one found in Nîmes.
As Christianity spread through the Roman Empire, Poitiers became a center for the faith. Hilary of Poitiers, the first Bishop from 350 to 367, worked to evangelize the town.
Two major military conflicts shaped the history of the area. The first was the Battle of Tours in 732. In this battle, the Frankish leader Charles Martel defeated the Umayyad Caliphate army led by Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi. The second was the Battle of Poitiers in 1356 during the Hundred Years' War. In this conflict, an English force defeated a larger French royal army. The English also captured King John II of France during this battle. These events left a lasting mark on the identity of the region.
Poitiers has long been a center of learning and culture. The University of Poitiers was founded in 1431. It has hosted famous thinkers such as René Descartes, Joachim du Bellay, and François Rabelais. Today, the city remains a major university town with more than 30,000 students.
