Pinus halepensis

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Aleppo pine is a tall tree. It lives in the warm Mediterranean region. This area includes many places like Spain, Italy, and Greece.

The tree has orange-red bark. The bark is thick and has deep cracks at the bottom. The leaves are called needles. These needles are long, thin, and yellowish green. They usually grow in pairs.

The tree also makes cones. These cones start out green. They turn a shiny red-brown after 24 months. The cones open slowly to let seeds out. Heat from forest fires can make them open faster. The seeds have a small wing. This helps the wind carry them away.

People use parts of this tree in many ways. They use the pine nuts to make sweet foods. In Tunisia, people make a pudding called asidet zgougou. In Malta, they make a dessert called prinjolata. Some people even use the tree for bonsai. This is a way to grow tiny trees in pots. The tree is also used for wood. This wood is hard and strong. It is very useful for building things.
