A sewing pattern is a guide for making clothes.

It is a template used to trace shapes onto fabric. Once the shapes are traced, the fabric is cut out. Then, the pieces are sewn together to make a garment.

There are two main ways to make patterns. In the flat-pattern method, a maker draws shapes on a flat surface. They use tools like rulers and curves to get the right shape. Another way is called draping.

In draping, a designer pins fabric directly onto a dress form. A dress form is a model that looks like a person. This helps with making fancy clothes like evening gowns.

Patterns can be made of paper or thick cardboard.

Some people buy patterns at stores. These often come on thin tissue paper. They include many sizes in one pack. Changing a pattern to fit different sizes is called grading.

Today, many makers even use computers to design and grade patterns. This helps them make clothes that fit many different people.
