A scrunchie is a soft hair tie.

It uses an elastic band covered in fabric. This fabric forms a pretty ruffle when you tie it. Scrunchies come in many colors and patterns. They can be small or very large.

Rommy Hunt Revson made the first prototype. She wanted a gentler way to tie hair. Metal ties could be hard on hair. She used a sewing machine to make them. She named them Scunci after her pet poodle. The name later changed to scrunchie. This name comes from how the fabric bunches up.

Scrunchies were very popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Many famous stars wore them on TV. Even some astronauts used them for their hair! They became popular again in the late 2010s. People like them because they are kind to hair. They do not leave dents in your hair. They are also good for curly or coarse hair.

Some people even wear them on their wrists. Young people sometimes give them as a sign of affection.
