A bow tie is a special kind of neckwear.

It sits just under a shirt collar. It does not hang down like a long necktie. Instead, it forms a shape with two loops. You can tie it by hand using a knot like a shoelace. These are called self-tie bow ties.

There are other ways to wear them. Pre-tied ties are already made into a bow shape. Some even clip straight onto the collar. These are called clip-on ties.

Most bow ties are made from silk, cotton, or polyester. Some people even make them from wood or bird feathers!

People wear bow ties for many reasons. They are common at weddings and formal events. Some doctors wear them so babies cannot grab them. Clowns use very large ones to be funny. Many people also think they look very smart. Some people wear them to show they like classic styles. They can be shaped like a butterfly or even a cricket bat.
