language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An ascot tie is a wide piece of neckwear.

It has wide, pointed wings at the end. You wrap it around your neck. Then you tie it in a knot. It covers the buttons on a dress shirt. Many ascots are made of patterned silk. You can use an ascot pin or a ring to hold the folds. This keeps the tie in place under the knot.

There is also a modern cravat. This is a more casual version. It is made of thinner silk. You wear it untied under an open shirt collar. It can look like a scarf.

People wear ascots for formal events. They are common at daytime weddings. The name comes from the Royal Ascot horse races. Some people wear them in uniforms, too. Students at a US Army school wear them. They wear black, blue, or white. In the US Navy, they use them for special ceremonies. Even cartoon characters like Fred from Scooby-Doo wear them!
