Paranoid is a very famous music album by the British band Black Sabbath.

It was released in the United Kingdom on 18 September 1970. The album is known as one of the most important heavy metal records ever made. It helped shape the way this kind of music sounds today. Many people call it a key influence on the whole genre. The title track was a big hit in the UK, reaching number four.

In July 2025, the song reached number one on a US rock chart.

The band used a special way to write their music. Most of their songs grew from playing together on stage. They practiced a lot in a place called the Beat Club in Zurich, Switzerland.

They stayed there for six weeks starting in November 1969. During that time, they played seven sets every single day. This long practice helped them learn how to play together. Tony Iommi would start with a guitar riff to begin a song. Then Ozzy Osbourne would find a melody, and Geezer Butler would write the words.

Recording the album happened at studios in London, England.

They worked with a producer named Rodger Bain in June 1970. Some songs were made very quickly in the studio. The song "Paranoid" was written as an afterthought. The band did not have enough songs for the whole album. The music for that track took only about twenty to twenty-five minutes to finish. The whole process, including the lyrics, was done in about two hours.

Many songs on the album tell deep or serious stories. "War Pigs" was first called "Walpurgis," but the name was changed. The song "Iron Man" tells a story about a man who travels through time. He becomes made of steel after seeing a scary future.

The song "Hand of Doom" is about soldiers returning from the Vietnam War. Even the song "Planet Caravan" shows a different side of the band. It is a quiet, calm song about floating through the stars.

This album changed how people thought about rock music. In 2017, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it as the number one metal album of all time. It also appeared on their list of the 500 greatest albums ever in 2020. The band wanted to play about the "other side of life" instead of simple pop songs. They used heavy sounds to talk about real things happening in the world. This made their music feel very different from other bands at the time. Their unique style helped start a whole new era of music.
