The song uses a special way of making music called the "Wall of Sound." The producer, Phil Spector, wanted to make a huge, grand sound. He used a full orchestra and many different instruments. The song features piano, guitars, brass, and strings. It also has shakers, castanets, and handclaps. The music starts with a very famous drum beat. This beat was played by a musician named Hal Blaine. He actually made the beat by accident when he dropped a drum stick. This mistake became one of the most famous sounds in pop music history.

Phil Spector, Jeff Barry, and Ellie Greenwich wrote the song together. They wrote the lyrics in an office in Los Angeles. Spector found the Ronettes in early 1963. The group included sisters Ronnie and Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley. At first, they performed as "Ronnie and the Relatives." Spector liked Ronnie's singing very much. He chose to record this song as their big debut. He even used the song to show his feelings for Ronnie. They recorded the music at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood.

Recording the song was a very hard job for the musicians. The band practiced for four hours before they even started recording. They had to do many takes to make it perfect. One keyboard player remembered doing over forty takes! Ronnie Spector also worked very hard on her part. She was only 18 years old when she recorded it. She even practiced her singing in the studio ladies' room. She liked the way the echo sounded in there. Other famous singers, like Cher, even helped with the backing vocals.

This song had a massive impact on the music world. It influenced many famous artists and bands. For example, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys was inspired by it. He even wrote a song called "Don't Worry Baby" as an answer to it. The Beatles were also influenced by this style of production. Many modern singers still copy the drum beat from this record. Some people call this song "Ground Zero" for modern pop music. It helped turn pop music into a serious kind of art. It remains a song that people still love to hear today.
