It is known for a thick and monumental sound. This music uses loud, distorted guitars and very strong beats. Many fans love it because the volume feels like a rush of energy. It can even feel like a big sensory experience. Some people call the loud sound an onslaught.

A typical band has a singer, a drummer, a bassist, and two guitarists. The electric guitar is the most important part. Guitarists use high volume and heavy fuzz to create their tone. They often use a trick called palm muting to make a tight, crunchy sound. Most songs also feature a guitar solo. These solos allow the musician to show off their great skill.

Most of the early music came from the United Kingdom and the United States. Three famous pioneer bands were founded in 1968. These were Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple.

While these bands became very popular, some critics did not like them. In the 1970s, American bands like Kiss and Alice Cooper made the music more accessible. Later, bands like Judas Priest helped the genre move away from blues music. This helped create the metal sound we know today.

There are many different styles of metal.

Some styles are very fast, like the blast beats used in black metal. Other styles are slower, such as power ballads. By the late 1970s, fans began calling themselves "metalheads" or "headbangers." Even today, new styles like nu metal continue to grow. These styles often mix metal with other music like hip-hop.

It is a way for musicians to show incredible speed and precision. Drummers must have great endurance to play complex patterns.

The music also brings people together in a shared culture. While many early performers were men, women have made a big impact too. Bands like Nightwish and groups like Voice of Baceprot show this strength. Whether it is fast or slow, metal is a way to share power. It remains a major part of the world of rock music.
