Heavy metal, often called metal, is a major subspecies of hard rock.

It is defined by a thick, monumental sound. This genre is characterized by loud, distorted guitars and emphatic rhythms. It also features dense bass-and-drum sounds and vigorous vocals. For many, the volume is a vital part of the experience. Sociologist Deena Weinstein describes the loudness as an "onslaught of sound."

Psychologist Jeffrey Arnett even compares metal concerts to the sensory equivalent of war. This intense volume is designed to sweep the listener into the sound. It provides a shot of youthful vitality through its sheer power.

To create this specific sound, musicians use precise techniques and specialized equipment.

A typical band lineup includes a drummer, a bassist, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, and a singer. The electric guitar is the most important element of the genre's sonic power. Guitarists achieve their tone through high volumes and heavy fuzz. For a classic tone, they use moderate gain to keep the music sounding open. They then turn the amplifier up very loud to create a "punch and grind" effect. Rhythm guitarists often use palm muting to create a tight, crunchy sound. This technique involves pressing the picking hand against the strings to emphasize the low end.

Guitar solos are an essential part of the heavy metal code.

These solos allow performers to express their musical virtuosity. While most songs feature at least one solo, some subgenres like nu metal or grindcore often omit them. The lead guitar often enters into an "affectionate rivalry" with the vocalist. They contend for dominance within the song. Meanwhile, the vocals must show an explicit display of emotion to remain authentic. Some critics argue that the singer's tone of voice is actually more important than the lyrics themselves.

The bass and drums provide the foundation that makes the music feel "heavy."

The bass plays a more important role in heavy metal than in any other rock genre. It provides the low-end sound necessary for the genre's weight. Basslines can range from simple low notes to complex riffs that double the guitar. Some musicians, like Metallica's Cliff Burton, even used the bass as a lead instrument with solos and chords.

Drumming requires exceptional endurance, speed, and precision. Drummers often use much larger kits than those found in other rock styles. They use techniques like the cymbal choke, where they strike and immediately silence a cymbal. Many extreme styles also rely on double-kicks and fast blast beats.

Heavy metal has a rich history that began in the late 1960s.

It developed primarily in the United Kingdom and the United States. In 1968, three pioneer bands were founded: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple.

While these bands attracted large audiences, many critics originally derided them. During the 1970s, American bands like Alice Cooper and Kiss made the sound more accessible through shock rock. In the mid-1970s, Judas Priest helped the genre evolve by moving away from blues influences. Motörhead also contributed by introducing a punk rock sensibility and more speed. By the late 1970s, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal emerged with bands like Iron Maiden.

Over the decades, the genre has split into many distinct subgenres.

In the 1980s, glam metal became popular with groups like Bon Jovi and Mötley Crüe. Simultaneously, underground scenes developed more aggressive styles. Thrash metal, featuring bands like Metallica and Megadeth, eventually broke into the mainstream. Other extreme styles, such as death metal and black metal, became lasting subcultural phenomena. Since the mid-1990s, the definition has expanded further. This includes groove metal and nu metal, which often incorporates elements of grunge and hip-hop. These variations change how much emphasis is placed on distortion, speed, or melody.

Musical language in metal is built on specific structures like the power chord.

A power chord is a simple interval, usually a perfect fifth. When played loudly with distortion, it creates a sense of overwhelming power. The genre also relies on riffs, which are melodic figures created from short rhythmic phrases. These phrases often have a jerky, staccato texture. Tempos in metal vary wildly. They can range from slow power ballads at 60 beats per minute to extremely fast blast beats at 350 beats per minute. This wide range allows the music to express a vast array of different moods.

While heavy metal was dominated by men for a long time, the culture is changing.

Until the mid-1980s, performers were almost exclusively male, with exceptions like Girlschool. However, by the 2010s, women began making a much larger impact. Some argue that the genre clearly empowers women. This is seen in power metal and symphonic metal, where many bands feature female lead singers. Groups like Nightwish and Delain are notable examples. Today, heavy metal remains a diverse and powerful force in global music culture.
