Glam metal

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Glam metal is a loud, high-energy subgenre of heavy metal music. It is also known by other names like hair metal or pop metal. This genre combines the heavy, powerful sounds of metal with catchy pop-influenced hooks and riffs. These hooks are melodic parts of a song that are easy to remember. Glam metal also features upbeat rock anthems and slow, emotional songs called power ballads. A power ballad is a song that starts quietly and gradually builds to a strong, dramatic finish. These ballads were very successful and helped the genre reach a much wider audience.

The visual style of glam metal is just as important as the music. It borrows heavily from the fashion of 1970s glam rock. Instead of the traditional denim and leather seen in other metal cultures, glam metal uses spandex, lace, and bright colors. Performers often have very long, backcombed hair that is held in place with heavy hair spray. They also use makeup and accessories like headbands. This look is often described as androgynous, meaning it mixes traditionally masculine and feminine styles. This flashy image helped the genre grow alongside the rise of MTV, a music television network.

Glam metal grew from several different musical movements. It fused the theatricality of acts like Alice Cooper and Kiss with the visual style of 1970s glam rock. Bands like the New York Dolls and T. Rex provided the early visual blueprint. The Finnish band Hanoi Rocks is also credited with helping set the look for later hair metal bands. In the United States, the scene became very active on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. Clubs like the Whisky a Go Go and the Starwood became famous hubs for this hard rock music. Many bands played these clubs on a "pay to play" basis to build their following.

Technique plays a major role in the glam metal sound. Many songs feature shred guitar solos, which are very fast and skillful playing sequences. One highly influential musician was Eddie Van Halen. He popularized a technique called tapping, which involves using both hands on the guitar neck. He demonstrated this on the song "Eruption" from his band's album. This specific sound and the energetic stage antics of singers like David Lee Roth influenced many future glam metal performers. The music often focuses on lyrical themes of love and lust, frequently directed at women.

The genre reached its peak of commercial success between 1982 and 1991. During this era, several albums achieved massive numbers on the Billboard charts. Def Leppard released the album Pyromania, which reached number two on the charts and stayed there for many weeks. It was eventually certified diamond by the RIAA. Another major success was Quiet Riot's album Metal Health, which reached number one. Many other bands like Mötley Crüe, Poison, Bon Jovi, and Ratt became household names. Because of its commercial nature, some sociologists and critics used terms like "lite metal" or "pop metal" to describe it.

In the early to mid-1990s, the popularity of glam metal declined sharply. This happened because a new movement called grunge and the alternative rock phenomenon changed musical tastes. Fans began to reject the flashy, artificial visual style of glam metal. They moved toward a more natural and stripped-down aesthetic. This shift caused many successful 1980s bands to face disbandment as their audiences moved in a different direction. The term "hair metal" actually became a common, often derogatory label during this period of decline.

Despite its decline, glam metal has seen a resurgence since the late 1990s. Many of the most popular acts from the 1980s have gone on successful reunion tours. New bands have also emerged to carry on the style. In Europe, bands like The Darkness, Crashdïet, and Reckless Love have found success. In the United States, bands like Steel Panther and Black Veil Brides continue the tradition. This shows that the combination of heavy riffs and big, visual performances still has a dedicated place in music culture.
