arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Glam metal is a loud and exciting style of music. It is a part of the heavy metal family. This music mixes heavy metal sounds with catchy pop tunes. These pop parts are often called hooks. Many songs feature fast guitar parts called riffs. Some songs are very slow and emotional. These are known as power ballads. They often start quiet and build to a big finish.

The look of glam metal is just as bold as the sound. Instead of wearing plain leather or denim, performers wear flashy clothes. They use bright colors, spandex, and lace. Many musicians wear heavy makeup and headbands. Their hair is often very long and big. They use hair spray to keep it that way. This style is sometimes called androgynous because it mixes different looks.

This music grew from glam rock in the 1970s. Early groups like the New York Dolls helped create the look. Other bands like Kiss and Alice Cooper were also important. In the late 1970s, these styles began to fuse together. The first examples appeared in the United States. Much of this happened in Los Angeles. Bands played in clubs on the Sunset Strip. These clubs included places like the Whisky a Go Go.

Glam metal became huge between 1982 and 1991. Many bands found great success during this time. Def Leppard had a very famous album called Pyromania. It reached number two on the Billboard charts. Quiet Riot also had a number one album called Metal Health. Other big names included Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi, and Poison. MTV helped these bands become famous on television.

In the early 1990s, the style became less popular. A new sound called grunge changed what people liked. Fans wanted a more natural and simple look. Many famous bands even stopped playing together. However, glam metal has come back since the late 1990s. Many old bands go on reunion tours now. New bands like The Darkness also play this style.
