Panentheism is a way of thinking about the divine and the universe. The word comes from a Greek phrase that means "all in God."

This idea is different from pantheism. Pantheism says that God and the universe are the same thing. Panentheism says that while the divine is in everything, the divine is also greater than the universe. It suggests that the divine intersects every part of our world. At the same time, the divine extends beyond space and time. This means the universe is part of something much larger.

How this works can vary depending on the belief system. Some versions say the universe is a way for God to show itself. Other forms suggest the entire universe is contained within God. This is seen in the Sufi concept of Wahdat al-wujud. It is also found in the Kabbalistic idea of Tzimtzum. In these views, the spirit is present everywhere. Yet, this spirit still transcends or goes beyond all created things.

Many thinkers have explored these ideas throughout history. The term was coined in 1828 by the German philosopher Karl Krause. He wanted to distinguish new ideas from the work of others. He looked at Hindu scripture to help form his thoughts. Before this, thinkers like Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Friedrich Schelling studied these relations. Even earlier, the Greek philosopher Heraclitus spoke of the Logos. He said that all things originate from this one source. Neoplatonists like Plotinus also taught about a divine being called "the One."

Different religions use these concepts in unique ways. In Buddhism, some view the highest reality as something that is "all and one." This reality is absolute and exists through the universe. Some Christian writers, like Richard Rohr, suggest this was an original view of the faith. They find support for it in mystical experiences. In the Latter Day Saint movement, the "Light of Christ" is said to give life to all things. These diverse views show how many people wonder about the connection between the sacred and the world.

These ideas link to many ways we understand the cosmos. Modern philosophers like Charles Hartshorne used panentheism to study how God might change or become more perfect. He combined these ideas with what is called process theology. Some thinkers today use terms like "theocosmocentrism" to describe these links. They look at how God's love for the world is part of who God is. Whether through ancient Greek thought or modern theology, these ideas help people explore the great mystery of existence.
