Pantheism is a family of beliefs about the world. It says that reality and divinity are the same thing.

Many people call this the totality of being. You might hear it called the universe or the cosmos. Pantheists see the universe as a self-organizing unity. It does not need a separate creator to make it. Instead, the whole thing is divine. People can feel awe and reverence for it. This is similar to how others feel about a god.

This belief works by looking at everything as one. It does not recognize a personal god. There is no god that acts like a human. Instead, the divine is found in all things. Some call this an immanent view. This means the divine is part of the world. Everything in existence is a part of this unity. Some thinkers say all reality is just a mode of this being. This is different from panentheism. Panentheism says divinity is even greater than the universe.

These ideas have been around for thousands of years. Early traces appear in tribal religions and animism. These groups often felt a unity with the divine. In ancient Greece, the religion of Orphism had similar ideas. They linked the creator god Phanes to the whole world. In the East, the Hindu school of Advaita Vedanta is very similar. It teaches that Brahman is the only true reality. The individual self is just a reflection of that reality. Early Taoism also has some similar ideas.

History gives us many important names in this study. The mathematician Joseph Raphson used the term in 1697. He wrote about it in Latin. The term became English in 1702. Baruch Spinoza was a very famous Dutch philosopher. His book, Ethics, helped spread these ideas in the West. He was a great rationalist from the 17th century. Another thinker, Giordano Bruno, held these views in the 1500s. He was an Italian friar and a cosmologist. The Roman Inquisition burned him at the stake in 1600.

Pantheism has touched many parts of human life. In the 1800s, many writers and thinkers followed it. This included people like Walt Whitman and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Even Abraham Lincoln may have had these views. A letter from his law partner, William Herndon, suggests this. Some people see it in the views of Albert Einstein.

The Catholic Church has often disagreed with these ideas. In 1864, Pope Pius IX formally condemned them. Despite this, the ideas remain a big part of philosophy. They help us wonder about our place in the cosmos.
