Antitheism is a specific way of thinking about belief. It is the position that people should oppose theism. Theism is the belief in a god or many gods.

Some people use this word to mean they are against any deity. This is different from being against all religions. Some religions do not have gods at all. For example, some groups in Buddhism or Jainism do not focus on a god. Antitheism focuses specifically on the idea of a divine being. It is a way to group certain views about faith.

How people use the word can change quite a bit. Some people use it as a label for their own views. They might think that theism is dangerous or harmful. They may believe it leads to bad behavior in the world.

Other thinkers have different ways to describe it. Jacques Maritain was a French Catholic philosopher. In 1953, he said it is an active struggle. He described it as fighting against anything that reminds us of a god. This shows how much the meaning can shift.

History shows us many different uses for this term. The word has been used in English since 1788. It comes from Greek roots meaning "against" and "god."

One person who likely created the word was Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. In 1877, a man named Robert Flint used it too. He was a professor at the University of Edinburgh. He gave a lecture called "Anti-Theistic Theories." He used the word to cover many different ideas. He wanted to group all ideas that opposed his own views.

There are many specific facts about these different ideas. Robert Flint had a very clear view of theism. He believed a supreme Being made the earth and heavens. He thought this Being was wise, powerful, and very good.

Other terms describe even more specific feelings. Dystheism is the belief that a god is not good. Misotheism is the feeling of hatred toward a god. Some groups, like certain Atheistic Satanists, hold these views. Christopher New even used the term for a thought experiment in 1993.

Learning these terms helps us understand how people think. It connects to how we study history and philosophy.

We can see how one word can have many meanings. Some use it to say a god is disproven. Others use it to describe a fight against religious ideas. It is a complex subject with many layers. Understanding these differences helps us see the big picture. We can see how people have argued about these things for a long time.
