Ein Sof is a name for God in the study of Kabbalah. The name means "infinite" or "unending." It describes God before any spiritual worlds were made. Some people call it the "nameless being." The Zohar says it is like "Ayin," which means "non-existent." This is because God is so much greater than human understanding.

It is a way to think about a being that has no end and no limits.

To make the universe, a special thing happens called tzimtzum. This is a "self-withdrawal" of the divine. It creates a space where new things can exist. Without this space, creations could not feel separate from their creator. From the Ein Sof, ten energies flow out called sefirot. These sefirot are found on a map called the Tree of Life. They help the light of the creator reach the world.

Many thinkers helped explain these ideas over many years. Azriel of Gerona used the term to describe a God without desire or action. This led to the idea of "Ohr Ein Sof," or "Infinite Light." In the 16th century, Moses ben Jacob Cordero made a full system for these ideas. He used a helpful way to explain how the light works. He said the sefirot are like vessels for the light.

Think about water being poured into a glass. The water takes the shape of the glass it is in. However, the water itself does not change. The sefirot are like those glasses for the divine light. The light stays the same, but the vessels filter it. This lets us see different parts of the creator. This way, the light can reach everything in the universe.

These ideas changed as time went on. In the 18th century, Hasidic Judaism looked at the "Atzmus," or the divine essence. They believed this essence is even higher than the Ein Sof. They taught that people can find this essence through sincere prayer. Today, the word "einsof" is used in modern Hebrew. It is a common word for "infinity." Scientists even use it when they talk about the infinity symbol.
