Onitsha is a major trading center for the whole region. It connects the coastal areas to the north. It also links eastern and western Nigeria together. This makes it a very important place for business.

The city works as a massive hub for people and goods. One of its most famous places is the Onitsha Main Market.

This is one of the largest markets in West Africa. Many different groups of people come here to trade. They travel from many parts of Nigeria to visit. The city also uses a big bridge to cross the river.

This bridge helps trade move quickly to places like Lagos. The river itself is also very useful for large ships. It is the northernmost point where big vessels can travel.

Onitsha has a very old and interesting history. Long ago, the area was called Ado N'Idu. It was part of the Benin empire.

Between 1630 and 1680, Igbo people moved here from Benin. They wanted to live by their own laws and customs. A leader named Eze Chima helped found the new kingdom. They named the new place Ọ̀nị̀chà Mmílí. This name means Onitsha-on-water because of the many rivers nearby.

Today, the city is home to millions of people. In 2025, the city itself had about 5,628,000 people.

The wider metropolitan area is even larger. It includes many nearby towns like Asaba, Obosi, and Nnewi. Some estimates say eight million people live in this whole area. This makes it one of the largest urban areas in Nigeria. Because it is so big, the city is growing very fast.
