Because it covers so much land and holds so many people, it is one of Nigeria's largest metropolitan areas.

The city functions as a vital economic and commercial hub. It serves as a major trading center between coastal regions and the north. It also links eastern and western Nigeria. The Niger River is a key part of this system. Onitsha is the northernmost point that large vessels can regularly navigate.

Onitsha has a complex and ancient history. Before the 17th century, the area was known as Ado N'Idu. It was a subordinate district of the Benin Empire. The indigenous people were the Igbo.

Historical accounts suggest the Igbo emigrated from the Benin Empire between 1630 and 1680. A leader named Eze Chima led these people. They sought to establish their own customs and laws. After a conflict with the Benin forces, the people moved to find new land. They eventually reached the Niger River. They named the new settlement Ọ̀nị̀chà Mmílí. This means "Onitsha-on-water" because of the many rivers nearby.

As the settlement grew, it developed distinct social structures. Eze Chima established the Order of Ozo to distinguish nobles. He also created the Onitsha Ofala Festival. This is an annual event where the king meets his subjects.

During the colonial period, British rule changed the city's administration. In the mid-1850s, the city became a trading port for the Royal Niger Company. This growth followed the abolition of slavery and the invention of the steam engine. Later, in 1900, Onitsha became part of a British protectorate. Christian missionaries also arrived and helped build schools and churches.

By 2016, the greater Onitsha area had an estimated eight million people. As of 2025, the city proper has about 5,628,000 residents. The city saw a huge influx of immigrants during the oil boom of the 1970s. This rapid growth has led to many challenges. Much of the building was done quickly without strict zoning regulations. This has resulted in a congested city with many slums.

The climate in Onitsha is shaped by two main seasons. The wet season runs from March to October. It is characterized by warm, overcast, and rainy weather. The dry season lasts from November to February. This season is hot and partly cloudy.

During the winter, the Saharan harmattan winds blow through the region. These winds create haze and reduce visibility. Temperatures usually stay between 19 and 31 degrees Celsius. The weather is influenced by trade winds from the Atlantic International Convergence Zone. This climate supports the ongoing life and movement within this massive metropolitan hub.
