The city has a long history. Long ago, people from the Benin empire moved here. They were the Igbo people. They founded the city between 1630 and 1680. They called the place Onitsha-on-water. This name means the place is watered by rivers.

Onitsha has two main seasons. The wet season lasts from March to October. It is warm and cloudy then. The dry season is from November to February. It is hot and partly cloudy. During winter, dry winds called harmattan blow through. These winds can make the air hazy.

Today, the city is a busy place. It is part of a very large urban area. This area includes many towns and cities. It is one of the largest in Nigeria.
