The city serves as the capital of the Sindh province. It is also a beta-global city, meaning it is a major hub for international connections. Karachi acts as Pakistan's primary industrial and financial center. Its economic influence is massive and helps drive the entire nation.

The city functions as a powerful engine for the Pakistani economy. As of 2021, its estimated GDP was over $200 billion in purchasing power parity (PPP).

Karachi is responsible for approximately 25% of Pakistan's entire GDP. It also collects 35% of the country's total tax revenue. The city's industrial output accounts for about 30% of what Pakistan produces. Most of the nation's banking and corporate power is concentrated here. In fact, 100% of Pakistan's banks and 90% of multinational corporations are headquartered in Karachi.

Transportation and trade are central to Karachi's daily operations. The city serves as a massive transport hub for the region. It contains the two largest seaports in Pakistan: the Port of Karachi and Port Qasim.

These maritime gateways handle approximately 95% of all Pakistan's foreign trade. For air travel, the city hosts Jinnah International Airport, the busiest airport in the country. This infrastructure allows goods and people to move quickly across borders. The city's connectivity makes it essential for international commerce.

Karachi's history stretches back through many millennia of human habitation. Ancient hunter-gatherers lived in the Mulri Hills on the northern outskirts.

Some historians believe the ancient Greeks knew this region. They may have called it Ramya or linked it to the seaport of Barbarikon. The site of Krokola might have been near the Malir River. This natural harbor was used by the fleet of Alexander the Great. Over many centuries, different empires and leaders shaped the coast. This long timeline shows how the land has always been a place for people to meet.

The modern city began as a fortified village called Kolachi-jo-Goth in 1729.

Legend says the name honors Mai Kolachi, whose son killed a man-eating crocodile. The settlement was founded by Sindhi Baniyas fleeing from a different harbor. By 1742, a Dutch report used the shortened name "Karachee." In 1839, British forces captured the city and destroyed Manora Fort.

Under British rule, the city transformed into a major colonial seaport. They built a large railway network to connect the port to the rest of the subcontinent. This period saw rapid growth as the city became the capital of Sindh in 1840.

Today, Karachi is one of the most diverse and cosmopolitan cities in Pakistan. It is a melting pot of many different ethnic and religious groups. The population includes significant communities of Bengali immigrants, Afghan refugees, and Rohingyas.

This diversity makes the city a unique social landscape. It is also known as a center for culture and style. The city is considered Pakistan's fashion capital. It has hosted the annual Karachi Fashion Week since 2009. This blend of many cultures creates a very lively atmosphere.

While Karachi is a place of great opportunity, it has also faced challenges. In the 1960s and 1970s, it was called the "City of Lights" for its nightlife.

However, the 1980s brought periods of sharp ethnic and political conflict. The city also dealt with high rates of violent crime for many years. Since 2013, a major crackdown operation has changed this. The city's crime ranking dropped from the 6th most dangerous in 2014 to 128th by 2022. Despite these struggles, Karachi continues to grow as a modern, high-rise skyline.
