It holds a very rare geographic status. It is a doubly landlocked country. This means it is surrounded entirely by other land. It is also far from any ocean. Only one other country on Earth, Liechtenstein, shares this trait. Uzbekistan is bordered by five different nations. Kazakhstan lies to the north. Kyrgyzstan is to the northeast. Tajikistan sits to the southeast. Afghanistan is to the south. Turkmenistan is to the southwest.

The nation is the most populous in Central Asia. More than 38.2 million people live there. Uzbek is the official language. Most inhabitants speak it. However, Russian and Tajik are also significant minority languages. Islam is the predominant religion. Most Uzbeks are Sunni Muslims. The government is a secular state. This means it follows a semi-presidential constitutional system. The country is divided into several parts. It has 12 regions called vilayats. It also includes Tashkent City. Finally, it contains one autonomous republic called Karakalpakstan.

History in this region began with nomadic tribes. These were the Eastern Iranian Scythians. They lived here during the first millennium BC. These nomads built extensive irrigation systems. These systems used rivers to support life. This allowed cities like Bukhara and Samarkand to emerge.

These cities became centers of high culture. Later, the region was part of the Achaemenid Empire. It also saw rule from the Greeks and the Sasanian Empire. The Silk Road brought even more change. This was a vast network of trade routes. Merchants became very wealthy as they moved goods. This era helped create the Islamic Golden Age in the region.

Many powerful empires later fought for control. The Mongol invasion in the 13th century caused great destruction. The Khwarazmian Empire was destroyed during this time. Later, a leader named Timur established the Timurid Empire.

He made Samarkand his capital. This period was known as the Timurid Renaissance. It was a time of great science and art. Timur's grandson, Ulugh Beg, was a famous astronomer. The empire eventually fell to the Kipchak Shaybanids in the 16th century. This is when the name "Uzbegistán" first appeared in literature. Some scholars believe the name comes from the word "beg," meaning master or leader.

Modern history brought more shifts in power. The Russian Empire expanded into Central Asia during the 19th century. This period was part of the "Great Game." In 1924, the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic was formed. It was a republic within the Soviet Union. During World War II, many Uzbeks fought in the Red Army. Over 1.4 million people served. Sadly, 263,005 soldiers died in the battles. In 1991, the country declared its independence. It became the Republic of Uzbekistan. Since then, the nation has undergone many changes.

The economy is currently in a state of transition. It is moving toward a market economy. This means prices and production are driven by supply and demand. Uzbekistan is a major producer of cotton. It also has a large supply of natural gas. Because of this, it is the largest electricity producer in Central Asia. The country's currency became fully convertible in 2017. This helped improve international trade. In June 2025, Fitch Ratings upgraded the country's credit rating. They moved it from BB− to BB. This shows that the economy is growing and remains stable.

Uzbekistan is now very active in global affairs. It is a member of the United Nations. It also belongs to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. The country is part of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Recent reforms have improved relations with neighbors. These neighbors include Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan. A 2020 United Nations report noted progress in development goals. The country is working toward a more stable and connected future.
