society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A nursing home is a special place for residential care. It helps older people, senior citizens, or people with disabilities. These facilities are also called care homes or skilled nursing facilities. People use them when they do not need a hospital. However, they still need help that is hard to give at home.

The staff members attend to many different medical needs. Most homes have skilled nurses and aides on hand 24 hours a day. Some residents even stay for short periods to recover from surgery or injury.

Many different services are offered inside these homes. Some residents receive physical therapy or speech-language therapy. Other services include daily housekeeping and planned activities for everyone. Some homes also offer memory care for people with dementia.

In the past, care for the elderly looked very different. In the 17th century, poorhouses or almshouses began in England. These were places meant to care for the poor. They often held orphans, elderly people, and those with mental illnesses.

In the 1800s, church and women's groups in the US built private homes. They wanted to protect people from their own religious communities. By the 1930s, the Great Depression made poorhouses very crowded. This led to the Social Security Act in 1935. This law helped people live in private institutions instead.

Nursing homes changed a lot during the 20th century. In the US, board-and-care homes became popular before World War II. By 1965, nursing homes became a solid and permanent fixture. This was when Medicare and Medicaid began to help pay for care. In the UK, the NHS was started in 1948. This helped create modern public nursing homes.

In 1987, the US introduced the Nursing Reform Act. This act helped define different services and added a Residents' Bill of Rights. These rules helped make sure homes stayed safe and clean.

Today, nursing homes are very varied and helpful. Some look like a hospital, while others look like a real home. In the US, many residents use Medicaid to pay for their stay.

Staff members include registered nurses and licensed practical nurses. Registered nurses often have two to six years of education. They create care plans and lead the other staff. Licensed practical nurses work under them to give medicine. Nursing assistants also provide vital help with daily tasks. All these people work together to care for residents.
