Geriatrics is a special branch of medicine for older adults. It focuses on the unique health needs that come with aging.

Doctors in this field are called geriatricians. They work to prevent, find, and treat diseases in older people. Some older adults may be very healthy. However, they are often more likely to have long-term health concerns. This means they may need more medical care than younger people. Geriatricians help patients manage many different health issues at once.

This type of care works in a very specific way. It is not just about fixing one problem. Instead, it uses a team of many different experts. This team might include nurses, pharmacists, and social workers. They also include physical and occupational therapists.

These experts work together to help a person stay active. They use shared decision-making to follow what the patient wants. A patient might want to keep moving easily or live longer. In the United States and Canada, doctors use a guide called the 5 M's. This includes looking at the mind, mobility, medications, multicomplexity, and what matters most to the patient.

Learning about the history of these words helps us understand them. The word geriatrics comes from two Greek words. The first is "geron," which means "old man." The second is "iatros," which means "healer."

There is also a related study called gerontology. Gerontology is the study of how the body ages over time. While gerontology studies the process, geriatrics is the actual medical care. Some people even call geriatric medicine "medical gerontology." This helps show how the two ideas are linked together.

There are many important facts about how aging affects the body. For example, an older person's organs may have less reserve. This means a small problem can become a big one. A mild fever might cause confusion instead of a cough. This confusion can lead to a fall or a broken hip.

Many older adults also deal with polypharmacy. This is a word for taking many different medicines at once. Because of age, the body might process these drugs differently. This can change how much pain relief a person feels. Doctors must be very careful when managing these many medications.

Geriatric care connects to many things we see in daily life. Doctors look at "activities of daily living" to see how people manage. These include basic tasks like feeding yourself or getting dressed. They also look at "instrumental activities" like cooking or managing money.

If these tasks become too hard, a person might need more help. This could mean living in a senior apartment or a nursing home. Doctors also watch for things like frailty or malnutrition. By watching these things, they help people live their best lives. They help people stay independent for as long as possible.
