Long ago, many people lived in poorhouses. These were places for people who had no money. Poorhouses were often crowded and not very clean. In the 1800s, groups began to make special homes for the elderly. These were private places for specific groups of people. In the United States, nursing homes became more common after World War II. They became a permanent way to give medical care. Today, nursing homes can look like a hospital. Other homes look more like a real house. Staff members help residents every day. Registered nurses lead the care. They make plans to help each person. Licensed practical nurses also help with medicine. Nursing assistants help with daily tasks. They help people eat, dress, and bathe. This care helps people stay safe and healthy.
