Assisted living

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Assisted living is a special way for people to live. It is a housing option for adults who cannot live alone. Some people have disabilities that make daily tasks hard. Other adults simply choose not to live by themselves anymore. These facilities offer a social model of care. This is different from the medical model used in nursing homes.

These homes help people stay safe and healthy. They provide a place where people can live together in a group.

Life in these homes works by providing help with daily activities. Staff members help with things like bathing and dressing. They also assist with walking, eating, and getting out of bed. Some staff help residents take their medicine. Many facilities also handle household chores like laundry and cooking.

Residents might live in a private apartment or a shared room. Some buildings even look like hotels or large houses. Newer buildings are often made to be easy for wheelchairs to use. They have extra-wide doors and wide hallways to help everyone move around.

This type of housing has changed over many years. It grew from small personal care homes into a large industry. In 1982, experts predicted a shift in how we look at health care. This shift moved from seeing care only as a service to seeing it as a business. Today, the industry is quite large and includes many different types of providers. Most of these companies are for-profit businesses. In 2010, none of the top twenty largest providers were non-profit organizations.

There are many facts and numbers to know about these homes. In 2012, the U.S. government estimated there were 22,200 assisted living facilities. These facilities held about 713,300 residents at that time. Most residents are women, making up about 74 percent of the population. A large group, about 54 percent, are 85 years or older. In 2014, the median monthly cost in the U.S. was $3,500. Each state has its own rules for how these homes must run. This is different from nursing homes, which follow federal rules.

Assisted living connects to many things you might already know. It sits between independent living and skilled nursing care. Some people use these homes as a bridge after a hospital stay. This helps them get strong before they go back home. Other people use them for a short time when a caregiver is away. Facilities also help people stay social through clubs and music. This helps residents keep their friendships and feel less lonely.
