Nine-ball is a fast and exciting game of skill played on a pool table.

Players use a long stick called a cue to hit a white cue ball. The goal is to sink nine colored balls into the table's six pockets. These balls are numbered 1 through 9. Each ball has a different color to help players see them. The most important ball is the number 9, often called the money ball. It usually has a yellow stripe on a white base. The person who pockets the 9 ball wins the game.

To start a game, players must set up the balls in a diamond shape. The 1 ball goes at the front of the diamond. The 9 ball is placed right in the center. A player then takes a big shot called the break. This first hit can be very powerful. If a player sinks the 9 ball on the break, they win immediately! Some players are so good they can win many games in a row. This is called a break and run. One player, Earl Strickland, once won 11 racks in a row during a 1996 tournament.

There are rules to keep the game fair for everyone. Players must always hit the lowest numbered ball on the table first. If they hit a higher ball by mistake, it is a foul. When a foul happens, the other player gets "ball in hand." This means they can place the white cue ball anywhere on the table. Players can also use a "push out" shot right after the break. This is a special move that does not have to hit a ball or a rail. These rules make the game a true test of focus.

Nine-ball started in the United States around the 1920s. While we do not know exactly who invented it, it became very popular. Today, the World Pool-Billiard Association, or WPA, runs the biggest official contests. Famous players like Efren Reyes and Shane Van Boening have made the game well-known. There are many big tournaments like the U.S. Open Nine-ball Championships. Some people even play in teams, which is called doubles play. You might see this in the World Cup of Pool.

Many other games are actually based on nine-ball. For example, ten-ball uses ten balls and is much harder to play. In ten-ball, you must hit the balls in a specific order. There is also a game called seven-ball that uses a special hexagon-shaped rack.

Some people even play six-ball using the balls left over from a nine-ball game. Nine-ball has even appeared in movies like *The Hustler*. Whether played for fun or in a big championship, it is a game of great precision.
