Players use a cue stick to hit a white cue ball. This ball must hit nine colored balls in order. You start with ball number one. You must hit the lowest number on the table first. The nine ball is the money ball. It usually has a yellow stripe. You win the game by pocketing it.

Each game starts with a break. This is a big hit to start the rack. If you sink the nine ball on the break, you win! A player can win many racks in a row. This is called a break and run. One player, Earl Strickland, once ran 11 racks in one row!

People play this game in many ways. Some play in pairs. This is called doubles. Others play solo. Many big contests exist. The WPA World Nine-ball Championship is a top event.
