Unlike many other parts of Japan, Nara is landlocked. This means it does not have an ocean coast. It is surrounded by other prefectures like Kyoto to the north and Osaka to the northwest.

It also shares borders with Mie to the east and Wakayama to the southwest. Many people live in the Nara Basin, which is a flat area in the north. The prefecture covers a total area of 3,691 square kilometres.

The land in Nara is mostly made of mountains and thick forests. In fact, only about 23% of the land is flat enough for people to live on.

The south is very mountainous and contains the Kii Mountains. This area makes up about 60% of the whole prefecture. The tallest mountain in the entire Kansai region is Mount Hakkyō.

In the summer, the mountains can receive very heavy rainfall. Some areas get between 3,000 and 5,000 millimetres of rain each year. This is among the heaviest rainfall in all of Japan.

Nara has a very long and important history. Many people call it the cradle of civilization for Japan. It was home to some of the country's earliest capital cities. For example, Heijō-kyō was a capital city from the year 710 to 784.

During this time, the royal court sent students to China to learn new things. These cities often used a grid pattern for their streets. Later, the capital moved to other places like Heian-kyō. Even after the capital moved, the temples in Nara stayed very powerful.

History in Nara has seen many changes and difficult times. In the year 1180, a clash between powerful groups led to a large fire. This fire destroyed many important old buildings at the Kōfuku-ji and Tōdai-ji temples.

Later, during the Sengoku period, the Tōdai-ji temple was set on fire again in 1567. Through many years of struggle, the region eventually became its own prefecture. This happened officially in 1887 when it became independent from Osaka. Since then, it has grown into the place we know today.

Today, Nara is a place where many people work and study in nearby cities. Many residents commute to Osaka for their jobs or school.

As of 2020, the population was about 1,321,805 people. Nara is very famous for its many special sites. It actually has more UNESCO World Heritage listings than any other prefecture in Japan. Visitors love to see the beautiful cherry blossoms in the spring. They also enjoy seeing the oak trees change color in the fall.
