The city is famous for many unique things. One of the most special sights is the kofun. These are burial mounds that date back to the fifth century. Many of these mounds are shaped like a keyhole. The Daisen Kofun is one of these mounds. It is the largest grave in the world by area.

The Mozu Tumulus Cluster also has over one hundred burial mounds. These were built during the Kofun period between 300 and 500 AD.

Sakai has a very long and interesting history. People have lived in this area since about 8,000 BC. During the medieval period, the city was ruled by wealthy merchants. From about 1450 to 1600, it became one of the richest cities in Japan. It was a major center for foreign trade. The city also made many textiles and ironware.

Sakai was even a center for the tea ceremony. A famous tea master named Sen no Rikyū was originally a merchant from this city.

Life in Sakai has changed many times over the years. In the 1600s, the city was a trade center for goods moving inland. Later, it became an industrial center for making bricks and textiles. The city has faced hard times, such as the 1934 Muroto typhoon. It was also heavily bombed during World War II in 1945.

Despite these events, the city continued to grow. In 2006, it became a designated city, which gives it more power to manage its own affairs.

Today, Sakai is a place where many people live and work. The climate is humid and subtropical. This means the summers are warm and the winters are cool. It rarely snows in the city.
