It sits along the beautiful Seto Inland Sea. To the north, the land rises into steep hillsides. The city is very close to the Setonaikai National Park. Some parts of the city are actually islands in the sea. These islands include names like Kurahashi-jima and Toyoshima.

The city has many people living in its urban centers. It also has many households spread across the region.

This city has a very strong history with the sea. Long ago, it was part of the ancient Aki Province. In the Edo period, the port was a busy place for the Hiroshima Domain. The Kure Naval District was first set up in 1889. This led to the building of a large naval arsenal. The city also saw a fast rise in steel and shipbuilding.

These attacks happened in June and July of 1945. After the war, the British Commonwealth Occupation Force stayed there until 1952.

Today, Kure is a very important maritime center. It is home to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
