Morpho butterflies live in warm forests.

They live in places like Mexico and South America. There are more than 29 types of Morpho. Many have bright, shiny wings.

The blue color is not from paint or dye. It comes from tiny parts on the wings. These parts are called nanostructures. They are too small to see without a tool. These tiny parts act like little mirrors. They bounce light to make a shimmer. This is called iridescence.

This shimmer can be seen from far away. Some males can be seen from one kilometer away!

In many types, only the males are blue. The females are often brown. This is called sexual dimorphism.

The life of a Morpho starts as a small egg. Then it becomes a caterpillar. These caterpillars have reddish-brown bodies. They have bright green or yellow spots. They can smell like bad butter to scare away birds.

Soon, they turn into a pupa. This is a hard shell where they change. Finally, the adult butterfly comes out.
