Many swallowtails have wings with a shape like a tail. This is how they got their name. The babies are called caterpillars. They eat many different plants. Some caterpillars eat plants that are toxic. This makes the caterpillars taste bad to predators. This helps them stay safe.

Caterpillars have a special way to defend themselves. They have a part called an osmeterium. This is a fleshy, forked organ. When a caterpillar feels threatened, it pushes this part out. It does this by filling it with fluid.

Some butterflies use mimicry to stay safe. This is when they look like other insects. They look like insects that taste bad. This trick stops predators from eating them. Adult butterflies sip nectar from flowers. They also sip mud and sometimes manure.
