Swallowtail butterfly

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Swallowtail butterflies are large and colorful insects in the family Papilionidae.

There are more than 550 different species in this family. Most of these butterflies live in warm, tropical areas. However, you can find them on every continent except Antarctica. Some species, like the birdwing butterflies, are the largest in the world. Many swallowtails have wings with a shape like a tail. This unique shape is why people call them swallowtails.

Caterpillars have a very clever way to stay safe from predators.

They have a special part called an osmeterium. This is a fleshy, forked organ located on their body. When a caterpillar feels threatened, it inflates this organ with fluid. This action pushes the osmeterium out through a groove in its skin. This helps protect the larva from animals like wasps or birds. Some caterpillars also eat plants that are toxic.

This makes the caterpillars taste bad to anything that tries to eat them.

Scientists have studied these butterflies for a very long time.

A famous scientist named Linnaeus chose the name Papilio for them. In Latin, the word papilio simply means butterfly. Linnaeus also used names from Greek stories for many species. For example, the species Papilio machaon was named after a character from the Iliad. Another species, Papilio homerus, was named after the Greek poet Homer. These names help us identify the many different kinds of swallowtails.

Swallowtails live in many different places around the Earth.

Most live in tropical regions between 20°N and 20°S. You can find many species in Southeast Asia and East Asia. In North America, there are about 40 different species. Some live at sea level, while others live high in the mountains. In the Himalayas, some Apollo species live at 6,000 meters. The northernmost swallowtail lives even north of the Arctic Circle.

Some butterflies use a trick called Batesian mimicry to stay safe.

This is when a butterfly looks like a different, distasteful species. Predators see the pattern and decide not to eat them. For example, the female eastern tiger swallowtail can look very dark. This makes her look like the pipevine swallowtail, which tastes bad. Adult butterflies also need food to stay active. They sip nectar from flowers, but they also sip mud and manure.
