People also enjoy them in Bhutan, Bangladesh, and India. These dumplings come in many different shapes. Tibetan momos often look like half-moons. In contrast, Nepali momos are usually shaped like round balls. People love them because they can be filled with so many tasty things. You can eat them as a snack or a full meal.

Making momos is a careful and fun process. First, you make a dough using flour and water. Sometimes, bakers add yeast or baking soda to make it soft.

You roll the dough into small, flat circles. Then, you place the filling right in the middle. You can fold the dough into a round pocket or a crescent shape. To cook them, most people use a special steamer called a mucktoo. The dumplings sit above a soup or broth to cook with steam. Some people even choose to pan-fry or deep-fry them instead.

There is a long history behind these tasty treats. The name "momo" likely comes from the Tibetan word for these foods. Some think the word was borrowed from Chinese names for wheat buns.

Dumplings were already popular in China during the Southern and Northern dynasties. Some very old dumplings were found in the Astana Cemetery. Many believe the Mongols carried the idea of dumplings from China in the 13th century. There is also a legend about a Nepali princess named Bhrikuti. She is said to have brought momos to Tibet long ago.

Fillings for momos can change depending on where you live. In the Himalayan regions, people often use yak or lamb meat. In other places, you might find chicken, pork, or water buffalo.

Many people also love vegetable fillings like cabbage, carrots, or potatoes. You can even find cheese fillings using paneer or chhurpi. In the Kathmandu Valley, some people make sweet momos. They use milk solids and sugar to make them a dessert. This shows how much variety exists in one single dish.

Momos are often served with special dipping sauces. In Tibet, people might use chili garlic sauce and pickled daikon.

For example, jhol momo is a Nepali soup with a spicy broth. This is a very popular meal to eat during the cold winter months. It is a wonderful way to share food with friends.
