These machines are meant for riding off the road. They are different from motorcycles or mopeds because they are not usually legal for streets. They are also much smaller than dirt bikes. Most minibikes use small engines. These engines often come from tools used in gardens.

How does a minibike work? Most models use a four-stroke engine with a horizontal crankshaft. This type of engine helps the bike move. The power goes through a centrifugal clutch transmission. This part has one or two speeds. The power then moves to the wheels using a chain drive. They also have high handlebars and low seats. This makes it easy for a rider to sit on the small frame.

Minibikes have an interesting history. In the 1950s, people made them by hand. They were often used as "pit bikes." These helped drag racers move around staging areas. In early 1959, three brothers named Ray, Larry, and Regis Michrina received a pit bike. They used it to create the first commercial minibikes. They started a brand called Lil Indian. They did not patent their design or the name. This allowed many other companies to start making them too.

Many companies joined the minibike market. Names like Arctic Cat, Rupp, and Taco became well known. Even Honda made a famous model called the Z50A. People nicknamed it a "Monkey Bike" because of how riders sat. Sales were very high in 1973. During that year, manufacturers sold 140,000 units. By 1976, the popularity had dropped. Fewer than ten companies kept making them after that.

Today, you can still find minibikes at many stores. They often cost less than $800. Some people like to build their own at home. They use parts from go-karts or gas-powered tools. These home-built bikes can be very fast. Some can even reach 100 miles per hour.

There is also a new trend for electric minibikes for adults. People in Southern California often ride them in large groups.
