You use them for fun off the road. They are not for street use. They are smaller than dirt bikes. Most minibikes use small engines. These engines often come from garden tools.

In 1959, the Michrina brothers made the first commercial minibikes. They based their design on a "pit bike." These were bikes used by racers to move around. The brothers started a brand called Lil Indian. Many companies began making minibikes in the 1960s. Sales were very high in 1973. Around 140,000 bikes were sold that year.

Today, you can still find minibikes for less than $800. Some people build their own at home. They use parts from tools or go-karts. These home-made bikes can be very fast. Some can even go 100 miles per hour.
