The Middle Peninsula is a large piece of land in Virginia.

It sits on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. This land is one of three big peninsulas in that area. To the north, the Rappahannock River marks the border. To the south, the York River separates it from the Virginia Peninsula. This area is made of six different counties. These counties are Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, and Middlesex.

Life on the peninsula is often quiet and rural. Many people there work in the fishing industry. Others work as truck-farmers who grow vegetables to sell. There are no large cities in this region. Instead, you will find small towns and communities. West Point has a mill that makes paper pulp. The community of Deltaville is a busy spot for boating on the bay.

Tappahannock sits on the Rappahannock River. Urbanna is also known for its tourism.

History has shaped how people live here. In the colonial era, the land was used for tobacco plantations. Today, the way of life feels very different. Two small land reservations are part of this area. These lands are home to the Pamunkey and Mattaponi Indian tribes. These tribes are recognized by the state of Virginia.

Many facts help us understand this place. As of the 2020 census, 92,886 people lived here. Two main highways help people travel across the land. U.S. Route 17 is called the Tidewater Trail. It connects Fredericksburg to the Hampton Roads area. U.S. Route 360 is the Northumberland Highway. It links the Northern Neck with Richmond and Danville.

Some parts of the peninsula connect to bigger regions. Gloucester and Mathews counties are part of the Hampton Roads area. You can cross the York River to reach them. The George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge makes this possible. To the west, King William and King and Queen counties are near Richmond. Before we had modern highways, people moved differently. They used passenger ferries and steam freighters to travel the bay.
