The Delmarva Peninsula is a long stretch of land on the East Coast of the United States.

It is a unique place that belongs to three different states. Most of the peninsula is in Delaware. Parts of it also belong to Maryland and Virginia. The name "Delmarva" is actually a short way to say Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. To the east, the huge Atlantic Ocean meets the shore. To the west, the Chesapeake Bay sits against the land.

The land is very flat and sandy. It is part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. There are almost no hills here. Even the highest points are not much above sea level.

People have lived on this peninsula for a very long time. Studies show Native Americans were here as far back as 10,000 BC. Some research even looks at much older times. Groups like the Assateague lived near the ocean. They lived in villages with thatch houses and gardens. In the spring, they planted crops to eat. Women and children tended the gardens while men hunted or fished. When the soil became tired, they moved to new spots. This helped them stay close to food and fresh land.

European explorers arrived many centuries ago. In 1566, a Spanish group reached the area. They wanted to start a colony but a storm stopped them. Later, the Dutch started a colony called Zwaanendael in 1631. This colony only lasted one year. Other groups like the Swedes also came to the northern part. Eventually, the British took control of the land. In 1776, the counties of Kent, New Castle, and Sussex became the state of Delaware. This happened after a long dispute over where the borders should be.

Today, the peninsula is a busy place for many different reasons. About 818,014 people lived in the twelve counties there in 2020. Dover is the largest city in Delaware. Salisbury is another large center in Maryland. Many people work in farming or commercial fishing. Tourism is also a big part of life because of the beautiful beaches. You can visit places like Ocean City or the Delaware Beaches.

Some visitors even go to Assateague Island to see wild ponies.

Traveling around the peninsula is easy thanks to several paths. A canal called the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal cuts through the north. There are many bridges that cross this water. You can also use the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the Bridge-Tunnel to reach the mainland. If you are coming from New Jersey, you can take a ferry to Lewes, Delaware.

The climate is often warm and humid. This makes it a great place for many plants and animals. The area stays connected to the rest of the country through these many roads and waterways.
