An estuary is a place where rivers and the ocean meet. This bay sits in the Mid-Atlantic region. It is mostly separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the Delmarva Peninsula. This peninsula includes parts of Delaware and the Eastern Shores of Maryland and Virginia. The mouth of the bay is located between Cape Henry and Cape Charles.

The bay is a very important place for the nature and the economy of many states.

Many different types of water fill the bay. It is the end point for more than 150 rivers and streams. The Susquehanna River is the largest one that flows in. Because it is an estuary, the water can be fresh, salty, or brackish. Brackish water is a mix of both. The north end near Baltimore has very little salt. The middle area has a medium amount of salt. The southern part is the saltiest and is like the ocean.

Long ago, a huge object from space hit the Earth. This happened about 35.5 million years ago. The impact created the Chesapeake Bay impact crater. Much later, the Susquehanna River valley formed in this area. About 10,000 years ago, rising sea levels flooded the valley. This created the bay we see today. Some parts of the coast have high cliffs. These are called the Calvert Cliffs. They are famous because people find fossilized shark teeth on the beaches.

Underwater, plants like eelgrass grow in the bay. These grasses provide food and a home for many animals.

People have lived near the bay for a very long time. Native Americans lived in villages here thousands of years ago. The name "Chesapeake" comes from an Algonquian word. It might mean "great water" or refer to a village.

Today, the bay faces some hard jobs. Pollution and runoff can make the water quality poor. This makes it hard for shellfish to grow. People began working to fix the bay in the 1990s. These efforts help the native oysters grow back.
