An estuary is a place where river water meets the sea. This bay is part of a large group of connected waters. It drains water from about 40 percent of the state. Rivers like the Sacramento and San Joaquin flow into it.

The water eventually reaches the Pacific Ocean through the Golden Gate strait. This bay is the second-largest estuary on the Pacific coast of the Americas. It is a very busy place for ships and people.

Water moves through the bay in a special way. It flows from the mountains and rivers into Suisun Bay. From there, it travels through the Carquinez Strait. It meets the Napa River at the entrance to San Pablo Bay. This whole system connects down to the main San Francisco Bay.

The bay is also a vital home for many living things. It acts as a nursery for fish like Pacific salmon. Crabs and halibut also rely on these waters to grow. The bay is a very important habitat for nature.

People have lived near this bay for a very long time. The Ohlone people were the indigenous inhabitants of the area.

European explorers did not find the bay for many centuries. This was because the entrance is narrow and often filled with fog. Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá first saw the bay in 1769. Later, Juan de Ayala became the first European to enter it in 1775.

History shows that the bay has changed its shape over time. In the 1850s, mining sent lots of dirt into the water. Later, people filled in the wetlands to build new things.

This made the bay about one third smaller than it used to be. In 1960, the Save the Bay movement began to help. They wanted to protect the wetlands from being filled in. Today, people work to restore the marshes and protect the water.
