It is the largest river in the entire state of California. The river begins high up in the Klamath Mountains. It flows south through many different types of land. Eventually, it reaches the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. From there, it flows into the San Francisco Bay.

The river starts as three main waterways. These are the Upper Sacramento, McCloud, and Pit rivers. They all flow into Shasta Lake.

The Pit River is the largest of these three. It flows through remote volcanic highlands in the northeast. The McCloud and Pit rivers are mostly spring-fed. This means they keep flowing even in dry summers. The Shasta Dam holds the water back for many uses. It helps control floods and makes electricity.

Humans have lived near this river for a very long time. For about 12,000 years, people depended on its resources. Native American tribes lived in the Sacramento Valley. They used the river as a path for trade and travel. In 1808, a Spanish explorer named Gabriel Moraga found it. He called it Rio de los Sacramentos. Later, the name was changed to Sacramento.

In the 1800s, everything changed when gold was found. This started the famous California Gold Rush. Hundreds of thousands of people traveled on trails to find gold. Later, many people moved to the area to farm. Today, the river is very busy with water projects. It provides water to over half of the people in California. It also helps water the most productive farms in the country.

The river has changed a lot from its natural state. Large dams and farms have changed how the water moves. This has made it harder for some fish to live there. The river used to have many chinook salmon. Now, the river is used to help cities and farms. It flows through many counties to reach the sea.
