The Sacramento River is the largest river in California.

It starts in the mountains of Northern California. Three main waterways flow into Shasta Lake to form the river. These are the Upper Sacramento, McCloud, and Pit rivers.

For a long time, the river was full of life. It had many fish, like the chinook salmon. Native American tribes lived near the river for 12,000 years. They used the water to travel and trade. Later, people found gold in a nearby stream. This started the Gold Rush. Many people moved to the area to find wealth. Soon, many people began to farm the land instead.

Today, the river is very different. Large dams hold the water back. This helps make power and provides water for farms. The river also gives water to over half of California's people. It flows through a wide area called a delta.

This delta is a place where fresh water meets the sea. Finally, the river joins the San Joaquin River. They flow into the San Francisco Bay.
