Much of this land is used for farming. The river provides water to help crops grow.

Many people have lived in this valley for a long time. Some groups lived there over 8,000 years ago. The river has had many names. One group called it Tihshachu. This name means "salmon-spearing place."

Today, the river looks different than it did in the past. People built many dams and levees. These are walls used to hold or guide water. These works changed how the river flows. Some parts of the river may even run dry. The river flows past cities like Stockton.
